# Prepare your smart home for family

Give the people you choose supported access to the home devices they may need. Apple Home offers invitations with different permissions. Record the device names, owner and support instructions, without collecting door codes or account passwords.

- 7 steps
- Official sources
### List what keeps the home running

Note the smart locks, thermostat, lights and other devices your household relies on. Identify the service or app controlling each one. Start with the devices needed to enter the house or carry out an ordinary daily task.

### Identify each device's account owner

Check who set up the controlling account and which people already have their own access. Record those names and the manufacturer. Do not assume that being on a family mobile plan makes someone an authorized user of every home accessory.

### Review Apple Home invitations if applicable

For Apple Home, read [Share control of your home](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102386). The Home app lets you add people. Choose the role and permissions that match what you want them to do.

### Check the home hub requirement

Apple says a home hub is required to share control on the latest version of Apple Home. Check [Apple's invitation requirements](https://support.apple.com/en-us/126270) before troubleshooting. Other manufacturers have their own requirements, so use their help pages for the devices you actually own.

### Review remote and editing permissions

Apple Home can allow or prevent remote control through its user permissions. Decide what each person needs. Consider separately whether someone should control existing accessories or change the setup.

### Try an ordinary household task together

Ask the invited person to use their own account for an agreed task, such as controlling a light. Check that it works. Keep a separate entry plan for the home if a device is unavailable.

### Leave device instructions with home records

Record manufacturer support links, the account owner and who has authorized access. Keep door codes, Wi-Fi passwords and account credentials outside this website. ## Good to know

### Does this cover every smart home brand?

No. Apple Home is the sourced example here. Check each device manufacturer's official help for its supported sharing options. A role in one app does not establish permission in another app or prove that every household device is covered.

### Should I share the main account password?

Use supported invitations or other provider-approved access arrangements. Record who has access. Your family needs to know the controlling app and support route, without a general household checklist becoming a collection of account credentials.

### Can Apple Home users control devices remotely?

Apple Home has a permission for remote control. Review that choice for each person instead of assuming everyone needs it. Check the home hub and device requirements in Apple's instructions before relying on access while someone is away from home.

### What if a smart lock stops working?

Make a separate practical entry arrangement with the people you choose. Record who has a physical key or which manufacturer to contact. This guide does not promise that an account invitation will solve a hardware, network or power problem.

### Helping a parent with home devices?

Ask which tasks they want someone else to handle and which permissions they want to keep. Use official invitations where available. Test the agreed task from the other person's own account, and leave clear support instructions with the home records.
