# Prepare both phones in your family

Prepare each person's phone and accounts separately, even if you share one carrier bill. Apple says each family member should use their own Apple Account. Review family sharing, recovery methods and legacy choices for both people.

- 7 steps
- Official sources
### List each person's phone arrangements

Record each person's device owner, mobile number, carrier account owner and email provider. Leave account numbers and credentials out. Shared billing does not tell you whether both devices use separate accounts or both people prepared their settings.

### Check that Apple Accounts are separate

Apple says each person should use their own Apple Account. Read [its family account guidance](https://support.apple.com/en-us/109040) if two phones share one account. Ask Apple for help before changing that setup, especially if records are already mixed.

### Review what you deliberately share

Decide which photo collections, purchases or household information should be shared and which should remain personal. Apple's family-sharing arrangements differ from using one identity on both phones. Make the purpose of each arrangement clear before adding or removing access.

### Check recovery for each account

Review trusted numbers and devices in your own Apple Account. Apple suggests considering an additional trusted number not associated with your iPhone. Check each person's supported choices. The other phone's existence alone does not complete a recovery arrangement.

### Set each person's legacy preferences

Each person should choose their own [Apple Legacy Contact](https://planbeforeyoudie.app/guides/phones/apple-legacy-contact) or [Google inactivity instructions](https://planbeforeyoudie.app/guides/phones/google-inactive-account-manager), as applicable. Let both people decide which information they want shared. One person's choice should not silently become the other person's preference about private accounts.

### Review who manages the shared carrier bill

Record who can contact the carrier and the role they actually hold. Use the [active-line guide](https://planbeforeyoudie.app/guides/phones/keep-a-phone-line-active) to review those permissions. Decide separately what should happen to each number if one person can no longer manage the account.

### Check the plan from both directions

Can each person find household instructions without the other's handset? Include someone outside the couple if that fits your wishes. Keep [the digital plan](https://planbeforeyoudie.app/guides/phones/digital-legacy) readable, using provider names and record locations instead of a shared password list.

## Good to know

### Should a couple use one Apple Account?

Apple says each family member should use their own Apple Account. It offers Family Sharing for sharing supported purchases and subscriptions. If you already share one identity, read Apple's guidance and ask for help before changing settings that may affect existing family records.

### What can happen when Apple Accounts are shared?

Apple warns that data can mix because services treat both people as the same person. Review which records are personal and which are intentionally shared. Do not assume that a familiar family arrangement protects the privacy or separation each person wants.

### Does one carrier bill mean one digital plan?

No. Review each person's accounts, wishes and supported settings separately. The shared bill concerns service management. The family photo collection, personal email and each person's legacy preferences may need different arrangements, even when both phones are paid through the same account.

### Can I use my own second number for recovery?

Apple allows additional trusted numbers and suggests considering one not tied to your iPhone. Review the provider's requirements in your own account. Do not assume that a number written in a family notebook has been added as a supported verification method.

### Helping two parents prepare together?

Give each person room to choose their contacts and privacy boundaries. Review both phones. Then check whether another chosen person could find the shared household instructions if neither parent could explain them.
