Memorialize an Instagram profile after a death
After a death, Instagram can turn a profile into a memorial that nobody can sign in to. Without a legacy contact, a memorialized profile can't be changed, and a legacy contact still can't post or read messages as the account holder. If you're planning ahead, choose a legacy contact and save the photos you want kept.

Steps
-
Ask Instagram to memorialize or remove it
Give them Instagram's memorialized-profile help. Explain that nobody can sign into a memorialized profile. Recheck your selection when your wishes change, then connect it with your other online account arrangements.
-
Choose what your family should remember
Look at the pictures and videos you want people to keep. Decide which belong in a family collection and which should stay private. A memorial profile and a family photo archive serve different purposes.
-
Open the official memorialization settings
On Instagram's website, open More, Settings, then Accounts Center. Choose Personal details, Account ownership and control, then Memorialization. Select your profile. Meta is updating account settings, so follow the current instructions if yours differ.
-
Consider a legacy contact
Instagram now supports choosing a legacy contact for a memorialized profile. Read the role's limits before selecting someone. Talk about your wishes.
-
Decide between remembrance and deletion
Instagram describes Delete After Death as an alternative in its memorialization help. Discuss that preference with your family before selecting it. Leave a clear note about the choice, so nobody has to guess which outcome you wanted.
-
Preserve chosen photos while you can
Share the pictures your family wants while you can choose them yourself. Use Google Photos or another arrangement you already use. Check that the recipient can actually find the chosen copies in their own collection.
-
Record the correct profile
Write down your Instagram username and profile address with your preference. Include any separate profiles you want your family to know about. Keep passwords, device passcodes and two-factor codes out of these notes and this website.
Good to know
Does Instagram have a legacy contact now?
Yes. Its current help pages describe a legacy contact and how to choose one. Older articles may say otherwise. Use Instagram's current instructions, and check the settings for the particular profile you want to prepare.
Can that person read my messages?
No. Instagram says a legacy contact cannot see your messages, post as you or send messages as you. Put the family information you want shared somewhere you choose.
Can anyone sign into a memorialized profile?
No. Instagram disables sign-in to a memorialized profile. Choosing a legacy contact is a separate, limited arrangement. Your family should use Instagram's process instead of trying to continue your account by signing in as you.
What if I do not choose someone?
Instagram says memorialized profiles without a legacy contact cannot be changed. Think about who could carry out your wishes. If you prefer deletion, review that option in Instagram's own help and tell your family your choice.
Helping a parent with Instagram?
Ask which profile and photos matter to them. Let them choose the contact or other preference themselves. Save only the family memories they want to share, and explain where those copies will be available later.
