What happens to a Microsoft account after death

Microsoft generally won't give account information to anyone but the account holder, and it needs a formally served subpoena or court order before it considers a request. If no one has the sign-in details, the account closes after 2 years of inactivity. If you're planning ahead, save the files your family needs now.

Steps

  1. Know what Microsoft will and won't share

Microsoft's deceased-account guidance generally restricts information given to non-account holders. If no one has your sign-in details, the account closes automatically after 2 years of inactivity. Don't promise your family your inbox or every file.

  2. Direct legal requests to a lawyer

If account information is needed after a death or incapacity, Microsoft describes formal service of a valid subpoena or court order. Talk with a lawyer in your state about the situation. Do not try to draft that request here.

  3. List the Microsoft services you use

Write down whether you use Outlook.com, Hotmail, OneDrive or another personal Microsoft service. Identify the family records you want preserved. Keep work or school accounts separate, because an organization may control those accounts and their records.

  4. Choose the files your family needs

Review the household information held in your OneDrive folders and email. Decide which copies you want your family to have today. Separate a document they need from unrelated correspondence or private material you do not want shared.

  5. Give chosen records a separate home

Create a family copy using a sharing or saving method you understand in your own account. Ask the recipient to find it. Record its location in your plan, without assuming that knowing your email address provides access.

  6. Record subscriptions and service contacts

List the Microsoft services you pay for and where you keep their billing information. Give your family the company's support page. Keep account numbers, card details, passwords and security codes outside this preparation list and outside this website.

  7. Check the plan outside your inbox

Ask someone you choose to locate the family copies without opening your Microsoft account. If the instructions exist only in your email, move the instructions somewhere suitable. Include your phone, photos and other online services in the same review.

Good to know

Does Microsoft promise to release account contents?

No. Its help page says it considers requests under applicable law and may be unable to provide content. Preparing selected family copies now avoids making those copies depend entirely on a later request and its outcome.

Can my family email Microsoft a court order?

Microsoft says it cannot respond to faxed or emailed requests for this process. Its guidance describes formal service on the registered agent. Ask a lawyer in your state how a request would need to be handled.

Should I leave my Microsoft password?

Do not use a family checklist as a password-sharing arrangement. Keep selected records and provider instructions separate from sign-in details. Your family should use the official process for their situation.

Is this the same as Google's setting?

No. Google provides Inactive Account Manager for advance account instructions. This Microsoft guide describes preparing family copies and understanding Microsoft's later request process. Review each provider separately instead of treating one company's setting as a rule for all accounts.

Helping a parent with Outlook or OneDrive?

Ask which documents the family would need and which messages should remain private. Let your parent choose and share the relevant copies. Keep the service names and file locations in their plan, with Microsoft's official help link.
